Years and years ago when I was working a job that I hated I was always searching around for how to make money online.
To be honest, I kind of did some weird things like that internet dating ebook that I created many years ago. I found a lot of things that didn’t really work for me. In fact, I made almost zero money out of that.
Now, the problem with that kind of thinking, that desperation feeling of like, “Oh, I gotta make money online…” it actually really makes you bypass many of the things that actually make people successful in the first place.
I want to share with you three things that have really made a difference in my business, especially compared to when I was first starting to find those entrepreneurial things, way back in the early two thousands, compared to where I am now where I actually make money doing things that I love.

Here are some things that I really think made the difference.
1. Do something that you love
I found something that I actually loved. Before I was just trying to make money for money’s sake, and I’d come up with all these really random business ideas and I thought, “Oh yeah, I could do that. I could make a book out of that. That looks like a problem that people have, maybe I should give it a try.” Or maybe you go into something that other people think is a good idea. Now, those things were not really in line with who I was.
What I actually really wanted to do was inspire and motivate people but I didn’t think it was a real job. I resisted it for a very long time.
I want you to think about what would you love to do and don’t start with the money side of it. Start with what you would love to do, what you’re really good at, what you’re really passionate about because that is going to give you a much better chance of making money. It has to be in line with you as a person, otherwise you’ll probably sabotage it.
2. Make sure your idea has marketable value
Make sure that your idea has some marketable value, and I know that sounds like yeah, really, duh, but there are things you can do that would make money more easily than other things. In fact, one of my mottoes is, ‘There are easier ways to make money.” I want you to think of products and services that you can offer that would be a really easy thing for you to do and people would give you money for it.
One of my very first blogs was doing movie reviews. I had no marketable plan for how people were going to give me money. When you do something like that, that is a really problematic business model. Going down the road where you’re really not clear about how people are going to pay you for it is really hard.
There are easier ways to make money.
It’s so much better if you have a really obvious product or service that you can offer, that people can give you money for pretty much straight away. It’s obvious but it’s something that some people miss.
3. Write down what you’re good at
Write down all the things that you’re good at and write down all the things that you think people would pay you for, and then find a way to create a product or service that’s going to show up on both lists. Now, of course you can be really good at one thing but no one will pay you for it or you can have a product or service that’s a really good idea but that’s not necessarily something that you would love to do.
At the start of your business you can just experiment and play with this.
When Fabienne Frederickson, one of my mentors, was starting out as a coach, she needed to make some extra money on the side and she used to run cooking classes in her apartment. If you know Fabienne today, you’d be thinking, “That’s a really strange way to start out.” But she said that people would ask her how to make a roasted chicken ’cause she was famous for it. She was like, “But everyone knows how to do this.” Right? They’re like, “No. Tell us what to do.” She was saying she was trying to make it really complicated and they’re like, “No, literally. What do you do?” She’s like, “You take the chicken out of the bag and you put it in the oven.” It was obvious to her but it was not obvious to other people.
Think of the things that are completely obvious and easy for you that other people would pay you for.
An example: maybe you’ve got a really large family and you’ve mastered the art of feeding six kids for like really cheap. Now, that might be really easy for you but for other people they’d be like, “Tell me how you do that. What do you do next? Do you have a spreadsheet for that? How can you make my life easier.” Or, maybe you found a really great way to discipline your dog or organize your home or get your baby to sleep or whatever it is.
Find those things that you’re really, really good at even if they’re really obvious to you.
Actually, especially if they’re obvious to you. Find a way that you could package your expertise to show people how to do it.
The more specific you can get the better. You literally want to do it as if you’re showing an alien from another planet how to do that thing from the start.
That’s how you can find that sweet spot for your online business. Now, here’s a bonus tip.
Bonus Tip: Work on your money blocks
You really have to work on your money blocks because you could be really talented at what you do, you can have a great marketable product, you can have something that people really want, it’s easy for you, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. But there’s something missing and this is probably why you haven’t done it in the first place.
Your money blocks will sabotage you for receiving money for what you do, especially if it’s easy. Honestly, my entrepreneurial life completely changed when I really focused on working on my money blocks because I’ve always been entrepreneurial, I always had a ton of ideas but I didn’t make money out of any of them for like a decade.
